The Family Ness was a cartoon that first aired from October 5, 1984 until March 25, 1985. It was produced by Peter Maddox’s Maddox Animation, who are also known for producing Penny Crayon and Jimbo and the Jetset.
The series follows Elspeth and Angus MacTout, their family and a family of Loch Ness Monsters. It had 25 episodes at 5 minutes in length, like the other Maddox Animation series.
But for series with 5 minute episodes, it does a pretty good job. My favourites include Elspeth and Angus Meet the Loch Ness Monsters, Ferocious-Ness and the Look-Alike Contest and The Maze of Urquhart Castle. Though a lot of episodes follow the same formula that someone thinks that they have seen the Loch Ness Monsters, then the Nessie family try to disguise whilst helping the kids out with something.
I really like the animation style, probably because it feels like a classic 80s cartoon with big eyes and noses. The colours are bright too, making it very nice too look at. It has Maddox Animation‘s trademark art style.
Overall, the episodes are quite standard (with a few execption). But those exceptions are really worth a look. I don’t think it’s as good as Penny Crayon (which whilst was better, had less episodes) but it’s slightly better than the incredibly formulaic Jimbo and the Jet Set.
Here is the fist episode, which introduces the series:
